PEP consists of a set of tools which allow a common software development over different computer architectures. This programming environment tries to force the developers to design modulised software, which is the best way to manage complex projects and to maintain them over a long period by changing developers.

PEP is independent from a certain programming language and other programming tools. It's implemented in a way that it can be easily ported to other UNIX versions. This simultaneously guarantees an easy adaption of a project to a different computer architecture.
