Cooperation of the Chair for Dialog-Oriented Systems with the SAP AG

The research on the ServiceGlobe system, an open Web service platform, is done in cooperation with the Advanced Infrastructure Program (AIP) group of SAP AG. This group has been exploring "how the design of SAP solutions can leverage the ability of blade servers to self-configure, in real time, to easily adapt to variations in computing demand" (see SAP Press Release). As part of this cooperation, parts of the ServiceGlobe technology are currently being integrated into the SAP NetWeaver™ technology platform. Besides several components for automatic load balancing and service virtualization, this includes a graphical tool for load control and load balancing, working as single point of control, that is utilized to control and monitor the server blades.

First results of this integration have been shown at SAP's user conference SAPPHIRE 2003, in Orlando, USA, in a keynote by Shai Agassi and Peter Zencke, Members of the Executive Board, SAP AG. As part of SAP's adaptive computing infrastructure, the ServiceGlobe system is installed on a blade server with 160 processors overall (with 2 and 4 processors per server blade, respectively), which is operated by the Advanced Infrastructure Program group of SAP. Several performance evaluations with high-volume business applications are conducted using this system.

We would especially like to thank Wolfgang Becker and Thorsten Dräger of SAP's Advanced Infrastructure Program group for their cooperation. In addition to this cooperation, the Chair for Dialog-Oriented Systems of the University of Passau successfully collaborates since more than five years with the Advanced Infrastructure Program group of the SAP AG as part of the Terabyte Project.
